Reading Like an Engineer: What to Read and How to Remember It

There is a complaint that every serious reader has made and every serious reader has felt: I read it, and I remember almost nothing. The book is finished, the article is closed, the course is completed, and the content is gone. The complaint is the symptom of the passive reading, and the passive reading is the default. The reading that produces the memory is the active reading, and the active reading is a skill. The skill is the subject of this article, and the engineer's version of it is the sharpest version.

The engineer reads differently from the general reader, and the difference is the discipline. The engineer reads to build: the mental model, the decision framework, the reusable understanding. The engineer reads with the question in mind: how does this work, how would I use this, where does this fail. The engineer reads with the pencil: the margin, the summary, the test. The reading like an engineer is the reading for the use, and the use is the memory.

1. The Reading for the Use

The general reader reads for the experience, and the experience is the pleasure. The engineer reads for the use, and the use is the test. The question that drives the engineer's reading is the question of the application: how does this change what I do, what would I do differently, what do I take from this. The question is the filter, and the filter is the difference between the reading that passes through and the reading that sticks.

The reading for the use changes the selection too: the engineer chooses the reading by the gap in the toolset, not the fashion of the shelf. The book that fills the gap is the book that is read with the attention. The article that answers the question is the article that is remembered. The selection is the first act of the memory: the reading that is chosen by the need is the reading that is used, and the used reading is the remembered reading.

2. The Pencil Is the Memory

The pencil is the oldest memory technology, and it is still the best. The margin is the dialogue: the question, the objection, the connection, the underline. The margin turns the passive page into the active conversation, and the conversation is the engagement, and the engagement is the memory. The reader who marks the page has done the first pass of the remembering, and the first pass is the foundation.

The marking has a discipline: the margin is for the thinking, not the highlighting. The highlight-all is the highlight-nothing: the page that is entirely yellow is the page that is entirely forgotten. The mark is the selection: the line that is worth the mark is the line that is worth the memory. The margin question is the memory hook: the reader who writes why does this matter has created the retrieval cue, and the cue is the memory.

3. The Summary Is the Transfer

The reader who cannot summarise has not understood, whatever the feeling of understanding. The summary is the truth test, and the truth test is the memory.

The summary has the forms: the chapter summary, the note card, the one-page map, the teaching note. The forms are the transfer devices, and the device is the choice. The reader who summarises in the own words is the reader who owns the content. The reader who only underlines is the reader who rents it. The summary is the ownership, and the ownership is the memory. The engineer's version is the summary as the specification: the one page that captures the essence, the page that can be reused.

4. The Connection Is the Web

The memory is the web, and the web is built by the connections. The new reading connects to the old: the book connects to the experience, the article connects to the project, the idea connects to the other idea. The connection is the anchor, and the anchor is the memory: the reading that is connected to something is the reading that is retrievable, because the retrieval travels the connections.

The connection is the deliberate act: the reader who asks where have I seen this before, how is this different from what I knew, what does this change in my model, is building the web. The web is the difference between the isolated fact and the integrated understanding, and the integrated understanding is the engineer's asset. The engineer reads with the map of the domain in mind, and the new reading is placed on the map. The placement is the memory, and the map is the expertise.

5. The Test Is the Proof

The reading that is tested is the reading that is kept. The test is the application: the problem solved with the new understanding, the code written with the new pattern, the decision made with the new framework. The test is the proof of the understanding, and the proof is the memory: the understanding that has been applied is the understanding that cannot be forgotten, because the application has built the neural pathway.

The test does not have to be grand: the engineer's test is the small experiment, the worked example, the explanation to a colleague, the blog post, the talk. The forms are the applications, and the application is the memory. The reader who explains the reading to someone else has tested it, and the test has passed or failed, and either way the memory is made. The test is the loop: the reading, the application, the feedback, the memory.

6. The Stack Is the Habit

The reading habit is the stack: the morning pages, the commute chapter, the lunchtime article, the weekend book. The stack is the routine, and the routine is the accumulation. The reading is the compound interest of the mind: the chapter a day is the thirty books a year, and the thirty books a year is the expertise that compounds. The stack is the structure, and the structure is the habit, and the habit is the memory's environment.

The stack has the discipline of the stack: the queue that is chosen, the time that is protected, the attention that is defended. The stack is the enemy of the doomscroll: the reading that is chosen beats the feed that is served. The engineer who controls the stack controls the input, and the input is the raw material of the thinking. The stack is the first decision, and the decision is the foundation of the reading life.

7. The Re-reading Is the Deepening

The re-reading is the difference between the reader who has read the book and the reader who knows the book, and the knowing is the value.

The engineer's re-reading is the reference shelf: the few books that are returned to, that are worn, that are annotated, that are known. 8. The Reading Is the Thinking

The final reframe is the reading as the thinking: the reading is not the input, it is the workout. The mind that reads actively is the mind that is exercised, and the exercise is the capability. The reading like an engineer is the training of the judgment: the pattern recognition, the critical filter, the synthesis, the application. The training is the point, and the content is the gym.

The engineer reads to build, and the building is the memory: the model, the framework, the understanding that is applied. The reading that is used is the reading that is kept, and the use is the discipline: the pencil, the summary, the connection, the test, the stack, the re-reading.
